The Benefits of Building Zangdok Palri

The Venerable Gelong Kalsang Rinpoche composed these two teachings on the benefits of constructing Zangdok Palri: “A Clear and Reliable Chronicle of the Three-Kaya Pure Land” and “A Call to Virtue: The Flowing River of Merit and Wisdom”. We present excerpts in English of these two teachings, with links to the original Tibetan teachings. We also include an excerpt from a teaching by the Venerable Tulku Thondup Rinpoche.

A Brief Explanation of the Benefits of Building [a monument to enlightenment] in Accordance with the Glorious Copper-Colored Mountain

Regarding the benefits of building the Glorious Copper-Colored Mountain in a way that resembles the real Glorious Copper-Colored Mountain, the great master Padmasambhava said with his enlightened speech:

"Just by going to that place, one attains enlightenment."

Therefore, by going to the location of the mandala of the palace and inhabitants of the Glorious Copper-Colored Mountain, Pure Land of Lotus Light, and engaging in the following ––taking refuge; generating bodhichitta; performing circumambulations and prostrations; making offerings; confessing negative actions; rejoicing in merit; requesting the turning of the Dharma wheel; requesting [the Buddha] to remain steadfast; dedicating merit as a cause for rebirth in Padma Öd; making aspirational prayers to be born there; and especially, making supplications for desired positive purposes ––just by doing these, one will swiftly complete the accumulations of merit and wisdom and definitely attain the precious state of enlightenment with ease.

Furthermore, the Mahaguru [Padmasambhava] said: "Just remembering that place brings great bliss."

Based on this teaching, just by remembering in one's mind that very place where the Glorious Copper-Colored Mountain Padma Öd pure land resides, limitless appearances of wisdom dawn, and through the power of the innate wisdom of great bliss being perfected in an instant, one will attain the supreme siddhi of Mahamudra in this very life - this is an unfailing promise.

If it is taught that even the supreme siddhi can be attained in this very lifetime, then common siddhis arise naturally like smoke arises from fire, so there is no need to further elaborate.

Thus, the characteristics of the layout and arrangement of the Three-Kaya pure land palace of Glorious Copper-Colored Mountain, Padma Öd, and its great qualities described here, are based on the teachings that the great master Padmasambhava of Orgyen––protector of beings in the degenerate age; embodiment of all the Buddhas of the three times united as one, whose compassion and enlightened activities are swifter than other Buddhas; and who has incomparable kindness toward Tibet, the Land of Snows––taught to Lady Yeshe Tsogyal, the Queen of Khar Chen Za, in connection with the Glorious Copper-Colored Mountain Padma Öd pure land.

[Verse of Praise]: "Wondrous, endowed with qualities, glorious mountain! Higher even than Mount Sumeru, king of mountains! Lofty and vast, beautiful like a lotus in form! Beautiful realm, perfectly arranged Three-Kaya pure land! Going to that land, the three doors purified of obscurations, The Three Kayas manifest in this very life - a la la!"

Thus, I, the monk Kalsang from Upper Tingri, commit to constructing the Glorious Copper-Colored Mountain, Padma Öd. At the request of Wang Tse Zen, whose pure intention is firm and resolute, who encouraged me to write this as a condition to encourage all the faithful patrons endowed with the power of generosity into virtuous action, this was written at Vogmin Sungngag Choeling in Taipei, on Thursday the eleventh day of the ninth Tibetan month.

May this also serve as a cause for all beings to attain the supreme status of the primordial protector!

Excerpt from “A Call to Virtue: The Flowing River of Merit and Wisdom” by the Venerable Gelong Kalsang Rinpoche

Above all, Zangdok Palri is being erected in the sacred land of Yangleshö, Nepal, a place renowned by masters and siddhas as the Bodhgaya of the Secret Mantra. It is the site where the Great Master Padmasambhava accomplished the practice of the Yangdak Heruka and Vajrakilaya in one, and thus actualized the supreme Mahamudra. To make any connection to this holy site brings blessings and siddhis, so there is no doubt that anyone who practices or does retreat here will attain sublime and common siddhis. Herein is just a snapshot of the history and significance of this sacred land.

Now, to share my mission and dream: I, Gelong Kalsang, the monk from Tingri, have been wanting to complete the sublime Zangdok Palri—the pure celestial palace of the Three Kayas—for a long time. But lacking sufficient funding, I have been unable to see this project to completion. Thus, I have created this building fund, and I appeal to all who might be inclined to contribute—any amount, great or small—to the completion of Zangdok Palri.

All of us—requester and donor alike—are connected through the force of our pure-hearted motivations and faith in this shared aspiration and auspicious endeavor.

I make this aspiration prayer for the completion of the sacred pure land of Zangdok Palri:

First, it will remain as a wish-fulfilling jewel on this earth, serving as a source of great merit and wisdom accumulations for all beings [who encounter it, and especially everyone] with faith in the Buddha’s teachings. Ultimately, it will be a cause for the attainment of the precious state of enlightenment—omniscient Buddhahood. And in the immediate future, it will pacify all obstacles and misfortunes, and increase longevity, merit, glory, wealth, and abundance. It will cause the Buddha’s precious teachings to thrive for a long time on this earth. It will pacify all imbalances of the elements, including earthquakes, fires, violence, conflicts, natural disasters, war, famine, drought, and other calamities without exception. It will bring timely rains and plentiful lush harvests. It will awaken and kindle love, compassion, and precious bodhichitta in the mindstreams of all beings, both leaders and followers, without effort. It will vanquish the poisonous mindstates of hate and evil. It will quell the wild winds of jealousy. It will implode the mountains of ego and pride. It will extinguish the wildfires of anger and hatred. It will dry up the bloody ocean of desire and lust. It will dispel the darkness of ignorance and stupidity. And it will herald a renewal of the golden age of great bliss and happiness, with perfect well-being. Ultimately, all of us will attain enlightenment together in one mandala, in the Lotus Light pure land of Zangdok Palri. This is the petition of one monk from the upper reaches of Tingri, Gelong Kalsang.

In the same way that eyedrops permeate the eyes, all resources dedicated to this project will be used for this noble purpose, and thus they will continue to endure. In ancient times, during the life of our peerless lord Buddha Shakyamuni, there was a householder named Gonmey Zejin who filled  the entire kingdom and its surrounding forest land with gold in order to commission the building of the sacred Buddhist institute of Kungarawa for Lord Buddha and his disciples. And even now, to this day, that sacred site remains and we can still go visit it. People travel from far and wide to make prayers and aspirations in that holy land. This is one example to inspire all generous sponsors who are inclined to donate toward this project.  To quote from the tantras,

If we don’t know the histories,

There is a danger that we won’t have confidence

In this great secret teaching of ultimate truth.

Thus it is said.

For all faith-bearing benefactors enriched with that joyful spirit of generosity,

Who never give up, who are always giving, who are natural givers of great generosity,

May you always serve the Buddha’s teachings in all of your lifetimes

And may you perfect the paramita of generosity.

Singular medicine that cures the suffering of beings,

Source of all happiness and contentment,

The Precious Buddha's Teachings: May they prevail ever after,

Sustained, honored, and embodied.

May even this stream of consciousness that sprung from the heart of this old beggar bring virtue and benefit always.

Teaching by the Venerable Tulku Thondup Rinpoche

Guru Rinpoche is not only a fully enlightened Buddha, but is also manifesting as a fully enlightened one. Thus, his manifested pure land, Zangdok Palri, may appear as a sacred world that is radiant, translucent, intangible, peaceful and joyful, but in reality it is the radiance of the wisdom, love and power of Guru Rinpoche. Thus, this pure land is the presence of Guru Rinpoche. Also, every particle of the pure land is a presence of Guru Rinpoche and his pure land ––infinite and boundless in nature, as the Buddha taught,

In every atom there are infinite pure lands as many as the numbers of atoms of the earth. In each pure land there are infinite Buddhas.

Thus, every detail of Zangdok Palri is a presence and a symbol for both the path and the goal of enlightenment. Zangdok Palri is Guru Rinpoche as well as his manifestation.

Hence, if we could see Zangdok Palri with confidence as the enlightened wisdom and qualities of Guru Rinpoche, we will start progressing through the path of training that will lead us to the goal, just as you will become what you see and think.

Prayer to be Reborn in Zangdok Palri by Jigme Lingpa

For centuries, realized masters have composed many aspiration prayers to be reborn in Zangdok Palri. Having visualized the attributes of the pure land in this way,

for the outer objective Zangdok Palri,

the inner subject—intrinsic awareness—aspires. By the power of this,

within my own body, replete with the attributes of the pure land of this long-enduring world,

may self-appearance be actualized as Zangdok Palri!
